GMoney Anchor - Doctor, today we are going to talk about weight loss. So, my first question to you is, what diet should one follow for weight loss?

Dr. Fenny Shah – See, first of all, weight loss is very necessary. It’s crucial. If we look at national surveys, in the last ten years, weight gain has increased significantly in India. Obesity has become a significant issue, even in children. So, no matter what method you choose for weight loss, the key is to enjoy the diet you’re following. If you don’t enjoy it, you won’t be able to maintain consistency.

GMoney Anchor - Right, you explained it very well. I read an article that said dairy products lead to weight gain. How much truth is there in this?

Dr. Fenny Shah – First of all, dairy products are essential for our health. However, the way weight gain happens is due to the fact that the milk available nowadays is often adulterated. We are getting artificial ingredients in our milk, which leads to weight gain. These artificial ingredients can harm our stomach, affecting gut flora. So, it’s better to limit dairy product intake to improve gut flora, aiding digestion and, ultimately, weight loss.

GMoney Anchor - I see. Another article I came across talked about cutting down on specific fats immediately, such as avoiding rice, wheat, or bread. What are your thoughts on that?

Dr. Fenny Shah – You see, if I were to speak in layman’s terms, it’s not about completely avoiding these items. We all love eating, right? It’s not practical to stop eating rice or bread for two days and then start again. If you enjoy rice, have it, but in limited portions. Pair it with healthier options like fibers, salads, and proteins, such as lentils. This way, the nutrient content increases, promoting weight loss.

GMoney Anchor - That makes sense. Many people only have two meals a day, skipping breakfast or some even skip meals altogether. What is your take on this?

Dr. Fenny Shah – No, it’s very dangerous for health. If you’re following any diet, it’s crucial to eat every two hours. We’re humans, and we want to eat. Skipping meals leads to increased cravings, appetite, and eventually overeating, resulting in weight gain. So, it’s better to eat in limited portions every two hours.

GMoney Anchor - Very right. Now, about intermittent fasting, which many people follow these days. Is it effective?

Dr. Fenny Shah – See, no diet is wrong. Every diet is designed for a specific group. It’s about what you enjoy and can maintain consistently. Intermittent fasting is a good option, but it might not be sustainable for everyone in the long run. It’s essential to find a balance that you enjoy and can stick to.

GMoney Anchor - Right, right. Moving on to the importance of physical exercise, what role does it play in weight loss?

Dr. Fenny Shah – Physical exercise is crucial for weight loss. However, it’s not just about exercise. Maintaining a balance is essential. You don’t need to overdo it. Walking is beneficial for weight maintenance. If you want to lose weight, going to the gym, doing strength training, and building muscle are important. Crash diets sometimes lead to muscle loss, so a proper consultation with a dietitian is advisable.

GMoney Anchor - Great advice. Lastly, if you have any tips for our viewers on adopting healthy lifestyle habits or a good diet, what would you suggest?

Dr. Fenny Shah – I would advise against crash diets. Instead, enjoy what you eat. Include almonds, walnuts, fruits, and salads in your diet. Maintain a balance, and along with a proper diet, focus on getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Sleep is crucial for weight loss, and without proper sleep, no matter how much you diet, it won’t be effective.

GMoney Anchor - Wonderful insights. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to join us on the Ghani Health Show. We are grateful to have had you.

Dr. Fenny Shah – It’s my pleasure to be on your show. Thank you for inviting me.
