GMoney Anchor - So, Doctor, today's topic is obesity. Could you please explain what obesity is?

Dr Manoj GandhiObesity is a condition that arises when excessive body fat accumulates, resulting in significant weight gain. It can have detrimental effects on one’s health and reduce life expectancy. The primary cause of weight gain is often a disturbance in our digestive system due to poor eating habits and unhealthy practices. When digestion is impaired, food is either not properly digested or accumulates as fat in the body, leading to obesity. Many people try various methods to reduce abdominal fat, but successful control often requires following standardized protein guidelines.

BMI, or Basic Metabolic Index, assesses a person’s fat levels based on their weight and height, providing guidance on appropriate treatment. These guidelines are designed according to Indian standards and address mild obesity. For moderate obesity cases, we follow these guidelines for treatment.

GMoney Anchor - Doctor, today we're discussing childhood obesity. How can parents help prevent it?

Dr Manoj GandhiParents play a crucial role in preventing childhood obesity. In today’s world, it’s essential to provide children with home-cooked meals, limit their consumption of junk food, reduce screen time (TV and mobile devices), and encourage physical activity from a young age. Providing a balanced and nutritious diet is paramount, with an emphasis on avoiding sugary and processed foods like chocolates, ice cream, and canned goods. It’s important to instill a habit of physical activity in children, both at home and in school, to combat obesity effectively.

GMoney Anchor - So, these measures are related to lifestyle, and they should be implemented, especially if you have children in your household. Dr. Gandhi, what are the consequences of leaving obesity untreated?

Dr Manoj GandhiNeglecting obesity can lead to several health complications, including hypertension, sleep apnea, shortness of breath, physical limitations, an increased risk of cancer, and the development of conditions like diabetes. These health issues not only impact one’s quality of life but also necessitate significant lifestyle changes that can be challenging to manage.

GMoney Anchor - If doctors need to treat severe obesity patients, what treatment options are available, and what are the follow-up procedures? Are medications an option?

Dr Manoj GandhiTreating severe obesity requires a comprehensive approach. Initially, lifestyle modifications are crucial, including regular physical activity and dietary changes. If a person adheres to these changes for the first six months to a year, they can expect to lose at least 10 kilograms of weight.

While medications are available, they are typically considered for short-term use due to potential side effects with prolonged usage. As a last resort, bariatric surgery, commonly known as obesity surgery, has become the gold standard for significant weight reduction in severe obesity cases.

GMoney Anchor - Thank you for the information, Dr. Gandhi. Now, could you provide some quick tips for our viewers? Many are listening to your advice right now. What can you suggest to avoid obesity?

Dr Manoj GandhiLifestyle changes are key. Prioritize getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night and engage in physical activities in the morning. Dedicate a minimum of half an hour to exercise for maintaining your body’s fitness.

There’s no need to reduce your overall diet; rather, consider modifying it. Opt for a high-protein diet, include fiber-rich foods, consume fruits, and incorporate vegetable soup into your meals. Stay well-hydrated with fluids but avoid fruit juices, whether homemade or commercially available, as they can be harmful.

GMoney Anchor - Are you referring to homemade fruit juices as well, or just commercially sold juices?

Dr Manoj GandhiAbsolutely, even when making juice at home, I recommend consuming whole fruits instead. Chewing your food thoroughly aids in proper digestion and retains essential pulp and fiber, which are lost when juicing.

GMoney Anchor - Thank you so much, Dr. Manoj Gandhi, for being on our show and sharing this valuable information. It's crucial to exercise control and make healthier choices to prevent future health issues. Once again, thank you for joining us.

Dr Manoj GandhiThank you.
