GMoney Anchor - GMoney, welcome to our show. Neha Bajaj welcomes you all warmly to our program where we always discuss topics that people want to know, hear, and see. Today, we are joined by a psychiatrist whose name is Dr. Rohit Kothari. He has been practicing for many years and has brought positive changes to many people's lives. He is a consultant psychiatrist and director of the Ekant Rehabilitation and De-Addiction Center located in Panchkula, Haryana. Doctor Rohit, a very warm welcome to you.

Dr. Rohit Kothari Thank you, Ma’am.

GMoney Anchor - We welcome you, sir. Today, we will discuss anxiety with you, Doctor Rohit. Nowadays, many children express a lot of anxiety. I feel very anxious, stressed, and restless. So, in clinical terms, how do you define anxiety?

Dr. Rohit Kothari Anxiety is something everyone experiences to some degree. It’s a feeling of apprehension that can occur in various situations, such as before exams, meeting someone new, starting a new job, or even receiving a phone call. It’s a diffuse and unpleasant sensation accompanied by physical symptoms like headaches, sweating, palpitations, chest tightness, stomach discomfort, and restlessness. These physical and psychological symptoms can manifest in different ways for different individuals.

GMoney Anchor - Can we say that some people are more prone to anxiety? Some people get anxious easily, taking stress over small things.

Dr. Rohit Kothari Absolutely. Just like how some people perform better in exams while others struggle, similarly, some people are more prone to anxiety. Factors like genetics, upbringing, and environmental influences play a significant role in shaping our anxiety levels. For example, if someone has had a stressful environment since childhood, they may be more prone to anxiety. Everyone’s way of experiencing anxiety is different and unique.

GMoney Anchor - Very well explained. Can you also tell us about the types of anxiety disorders?

Dr. Rohit Kothari – Sure. Besides general anxiety, there are other specific anxiety disorders. One of them is panic disorder, where individuals experience sudden and intense panic attacks, accompanied by physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, and difficulty breathing. Then there are phobias, which are irrational fears of specific objects or situations, such as fear of heights or social situations. Performance anxiety is another type, where individuals feel anxious about performing in front of others, like during interviews or public speaking engagements. Lastly, there’s generalized anxiety disorder, which involves excessive worrying about various aspects of life, accompanied by both physical and psychological symptoms.

GMoney Anchor - It's clear now. As our society progresses and life becomes faster-paced, it seems our mental health is lagging behind. Despite advancements, people still face anxiety and dissatisfaction. Now, I want to ask you, Doctor Rohit, apart from exam-related anxiety in children, what are the major causes of anxiety and restlessness in adults that you see in your practice?

Dr. Rohit Kothari – Many adults nowadays prioritize work over their mental well-being. They are constantly chasing deadlines and neglecting their own needs. They have set agendas and neglect self-care, which leads to increased anxiety and dissatisfaction. It’s essential for individuals to prioritize themselves and allocate some time each day for activities that bring them joy and relaxation. Taking small steps towards self-care every day can significantly improve mental well-being.

GMoney Anchor - Absolutely, baby steps every day. So, Doctor Rohit, I want to talk to you about anxiety prevention and treatment. Many people hesitate to seek help from psychiatrists due to the stigma attached to mental health issues. What would you like to say about the potential severity of anxiety if left untreated, and the importance of seeking guidance from experts?

Dr. Rohit Kothari – It’s crucial for individuals to prioritize their mental health and seek help if they’re experiencing persistent anxiety. Delaying treatment can lead to worsening symptoms and associated depression. It’s important to understand that anxiety disorders are treatable, and there are various treatment options available, including therapy and medication. Seeking help from a psychiatrist can provide individuals with the support and guidance they need to manage their anxiety effectively.

GMoney Anchor - Thank you, Doctor Rohit, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to enlighten us about anxiety. Your insights have been invaluable.
