GMoney Anchor - I am Neha Bajaj. A very warm welcome to all of you on the GMoney Health Show and in today's video we are joined by Dr. Abhaykant Mishra who is the Director of Tata Hospital which is located in Nalasopara, Mumbai. You are very welcome, Dr. Mishra.

Dr. Pushkar Lele Thank you.

GMoney Anchor - We are glad to have you as a guest doctor. Today we are going to talk about a disease that is seen more during a particular season, but if children catch it, many problems arise. I am talking about dengue, about which we all have limited information. So doctor, please tell us what dengue fever is?

dengue symptoms

Dr. Pushkar Lele – Dengue fever is caused by mosquito bites and four types of viruses.

Once dengue happens, you get lifelong immunity. You will not get exactly the same type of dengue. But you can get the remaining three types of dengue.

GMoney Anchor - So it means a mosquito bite. Like you said, if it happens once, that type of dengue fever will not happen again. In which season do you get the maximum number of dengue patients? Does it come only in the rainy season, or does dengue occur for 12 months of the year?

Dr. Pushkar Lele Dengue spreads more during the rainy season and towards the end of the rainy season.

GMoney Anchor - Ok sir, what are the initial symptoms that patients feel?

Dr. Pushkar Lele The first symptom of dengue is a high grade fever with chills. Body pain and red rashes also appear on the body.

GMoney Anchor - What is the difference between a normal viral fever and dengue?

Dr. Pushkar Lele Your child will remain active in viral fever but become more lethargic in dengue fever. He won’t feel like eating food.

GMoney Anchor - Which tests are necessary for dengue, how are they tested?

dengue fever treatment

Dr. Pushkar Lele In dengue fever, the platelet count becomes lower than normal. This disease occurs in three stages. First you get a high grade fever, then within 3 days plasma leaks into your body and accumulates in other parts, which reduces platelets. WBC count decreases. This lasts for 4-7 days, and recovery starts after the seventh day. Then our body starts making platelets.

GMoney Anchor - Well, sir, does every dengue patient need hospitalization?

Dr. Pushkar Lele Dengue can be cured even by staying at home. Just drink more water. If there is difficulty breathing, the patient needs hospitalization.

GMoney Anchor - Sir, how do I avoid dengue fever? Is there any way in which we can prevent dengue.

Dr. Pushkar Lele Dengue is spread by mosquitoes, and these mosquitoes thrive near our house and where dirty water gets accumulated. Do not allow dirty water to accumulate outside the house.

GMoney Anchor - Any one message that you would like to give to all the parents.

Dr. Pushkar Lele If your child get a fever, don’t worry. If it is a normal viral fever, then your child will be fine in 2 – 3 days, but if dengue is diagnosed pay attention and get it treated immediately.

GMoney Anchor - Ok, thank you so much doctor for joining GMoney Health Show.

Dr. Pushkar Lele Thank you madam, thank you very much.
