GMoney Anchor - Today, we are joined by Dr. Sandeep, a highly experienced pediatric surgeon and urologist with twelve years of expertise. He also serves as a consultant at Rama Krishna Hospital in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Dr. Sandeep, welcome to the show!

Dr. Sandeep Hambarde Thank you, Neha. It’s a pleasure to be here.

GMoney Anchor - Today, we're discussing phimosis, a condition many are unfamiliar with. Could you please explain what phimosis is?

Dr. Sandeep Hambarde Certainly. In simple terms, phimosis refers to the inability to retract the foreskin over the head of the penis in young boys. While this is normal in infants and typically resolves on its own, in some cases, it can persist and lead to complications, known as pathological phimosis.

GMoney Anchor - What are the causes of phimosis?

Dr. Sandeep Hambarde Phimosis can occur due to infections in the small glands beneath the foreskin. If these glands become infected, they can cause adhesions, making it difficult to retract the foreskin. Factors such as poor hygiene and an increase in junk food consumption have contributed to a rise in the incidence of phimosis.

GMoney Anchor - At what age group is phimosis most commonly seen?

Dr. Sandeep Hambarde – Phimosis is most prevalent in boys between the ages of one to twelve, with the highest incidence occurring between four to seven years.

GMoney Anchor - What are the consequences if phimosis is left untreated?

Dr. Sandeep Hambarde – Untreated phimosis can lead to urinary tract infections, bladder stones, kidney issues, and even kidney failure due to back pressure changes in the urinary system. It’s crucial to address phimosis promptly to prevent these complications.

GMoney Anchor - How is phimosis treated?

Dr. Sandeep Hambarde – Conservative treatment, such as warm water baths and gentle foreskin massage, may suffice in mild cases. However, if the condition persists or leads to complications, surgical intervention, known as circumcision, may be necessary.

GMoney Anchor - Thank you for shedding light on this topic, Dr. Sandeep. It's important for parents to be aware of these signs and symptoms in their children. If they notice any issues, they should consult a pediatric surgeon.

Dr. Sandeep Hambarde – Absolutely, Neha. Early intervention is key in managing phimosis effectively.
